Sital Youngsters were crowned the new champions of the Championship Division 30-Over League on Sunday (February 9) in their debut season.
The debutants, led by Zaara Bhiki and Shanmatie Nowrang, who picked up three wickets each, claimed the title after defeating closest challengers Victoria Cricket Club (CC) in their final match of the league, hosted by T&T Women’s Cricket Association’s (TTWCA), at the Youngsters Recreation Ground, Pancham Street in Felicity.
Victoria CC batted first and posted a meagre score of 68 all out in 14.2 overs. Shanta Roopchan and Abigail Boodoo tried to put up runs on the board but came up way short of a credible target. Roopchan ran out of partners and finished unbeaten on 15 while Boodoo was second-best with 10.
Bhiki and Nowrang ran through Victoria CC’s line-up. The former was economical as well claiming 3-5, while her bowling partner sealed 3-14. Samantha Ramgoolam was also good at the bowling crease with 2-16.
In reply, the Youngsters reached the winning target of 69-3 in just 5.5 overs with Crystal Hanslal leading the batting with 34 not out and Stechelle Hayling Jordan added 20.
Amala Durgadeen (1-1) and Chelsey Sookhram (1-12) picked up a wicket each in a losing effort for Victoria CC, who will await the winner of the rescheduled match between Cricket Lovers and Brenda Solozano Cricket Academy (BSCA) this Sunday at Las Lomas Recreation Ground. Cricket Lovers have a chance to take second with a victory against BSCA.
Cricket Lovers moved within a chance for the runner-up prize after defeating North Zone by seven wickets thanks for a brilliant 4-22 from Amy Holder and an impressive 3-14 from Pauline Dufeal.
In the Premiership Division, the University of the West Indies Women’s Cricket Club (UWI WCC) completed another win in the TTWCA’s 50-Over League to remain atop the seven-team table after five rounds with 40 points—four wins and a loss.
