Akeil Cooper played a captain’s knock and scored an unbeaten 99 to lead a spirited Powergen Sports to a decent first innings total of 272 against a Queen’s Park team with world-class off-spinner Sunil Narine in the attack in Round Two of the Trinidad and Tobago Cricket Board Premier Division League competition on Saturday.
Powergen is missing batsmen Cephas Cooper and Jason Mohammed, both on Red Force duty, while Queen’s Park was without almost the entire first-choice bowling attack as Anderson Phillip, Jayden Seales, Yannic Cariah, Khary Pierre, and Bryan Charles were all involved in the Red Force’s huge win against Windward Islands Volcanoes on Friday at Arnos Vale, St Vincent, in the Cricket West Indies First-Class Championships.
Videsh Sookhai started things off at the top of the order with 66. Queen’s Park chipped away at the Powergen’s batting with the wickets of Daniel Wiliams (0), Mbeki Joseph (16), and Navin Bediasee (0), all falling to fast bowler Dexter Sween, who finished with three for 64.
Terrance Hinds, back in Queen’s Park uniform after a year at champions Central Sports, bowled Ewart Nicholson, who made 17, and Narine removed the dangerous Dejourn Charles for nine.
Sookhai’s resistance ended when last year’s captain, Isaiah Rajah, got help from this season’s captain, Darren Bravo, who caught him. Rajah got three wickets.
Cooper, batting at number seven, then batted for 200 minutes and faced 152 balls in his unbeaten 99 as he lost partners at the back end of the innings.
Nicholas Ali scored 38 to lend support to his skipper, but in the end, Powergen scored 272 all out.
Queen’s Park looked comfortable during their turn at the crease, closing on 68 without loss at stumps with Jordan Warner unbeaten on 48.
