Eight-year-old Xhaiden Darius has added another title to his trophy cabinet for the season, after taking the Junior School’s Intellectual National Chutney Monarch title yesterday.
Darius, a Savonetta Private School student, defeated last year’s champ, Katelin Sultan, with his rendition of Melody of Chutney during the event at the NCIC Nagar, Chaguanas.
He was congratulated with a big hug from Sultan, a student of the Warrenville TIA, when the announcement was made by the National Chutney Foundation of T&T (NCFTT) and Tassa Association of T&T (TATT).
Celebrit-T Charles, of Lower Morvant Primary, placed third.
Darius is also the Junior Calypso Monarch and placed third in the Schools Soca Monarch Competition.
Dabria Baptiste, a student of St Joseph’s Convent, San Fernando, took the Senior title with I Want to Sing, a song about her desire to sing chutney music.
Marcus McDonald and Darien McDonald, of Presentation College, San Fernando, placed second and third respectively.
Meanwhile, the National Tassarama Competition saw Presentation College, Chaguanas, winning first place among the seniors, while there was a tie between Debe Hindu School and Avocat Vedic School for first place in the juniors’ event.
Curriculum coordinator for the Visual and Performing Arts Unit at the Ministry of Education, Reynold Ramlogan, assured that outstanding prize money for the 2024 and 2025 competitions were being processed. He also said the ministry will partner with the NCFTT and TATT for future events.
