A po­lice of­fi­cer was knocked down by a sus­pect who at­tempt­ed to evade law­men dur­ing a road­block in Bel­mont yes­ter­day.

He was lat­er pur­sued and in­jured af­ter po­lice had cause to re­turn fire in the vicin­i­ty of Jern­ing­ham Av­enue and Queen’s Park East as the man sped off.

There were re­ports of a shoot­ing at the cor­ner of Nor­folk Street and Jern­ing­ham Av­enue, Bel­mont, around 4 pm, which prompt­ed of­fi­cers to set up a road­block in the area. It was al­leged that up­on see­ing the po­lice, the sus­pect zipped out of traf­fic and sped off, hit­ting one of the of­fi­cers.

Giv­ing chase as he at­tempt­ed to es­cape, it was re­port­ed the sus­pect fired at of­fi­cers, prompt­ing them to re­turn fire. As the sus­pect’s car stalled, law­men pulled him out of the ve­hi­cle and placed him on the road.

A quan­ti­ty of drugs was re­port­ed­ly found in the car.

Both the of­fi­cer and the sus­pect were treat­ed at the hos­pi­tal.
