A police officer was knocked down by a suspect who attempted to evade lawmen during a roadblock in Belmont yesterday.
He was later pursued and injured after police had cause to return fire in the vicinity of Jerningham Avenue and Queen’s Park East as the man sped off.
There were reports of a shooting at the corner of Norfolk Street and Jerningham Avenue, Belmont, around 4 pm, which prompted officers to set up a roadblock in the area. It was alleged that upon seeing the police, the suspect zipped out of traffic and sped off, hitting one of the officers.
Giving chase as he attempted to escape, it was reported the suspect fired at officers, prompting them to return fire. As the suspect’s car stalled, lawmen pulled him out of the vehicle and placed him on the road.
A quantity of drugs was reportedly found in the car.
Both the officer and the suspect were treated at the hospital.
