The Member of Parliament for Moruga/ Tableland is calling on the Minister of National Security to prioritise crimefighting efforts in Moruga/Tableland.
She added that the criminal behaviour that is taking place in her constituency "is a complete failure of leadership and a betrayal of the most basic duty of any government—to protect its citizens."
Earlier today, a home invasion took place in St. Mary’s, Moruga, resulting in the death of an elderly woman.
Benjamin said she was deeply saddened and outraged by the incident since, "this heinous act is yet another devastating blow to our community, which has been living in fear due to the unchecked rise in violent crime. "
The MP added that she has repeatedly called on the Minister of National Security, Fitzgerald Hinds, "to prioritise crimefighting efforts in Moruga/Tableland, where home invasions, robberies, and murders have become all too common." However, she stated that despite their pleas, "the government continues to turn a blind eye to the suffering of our people, offering empty promises while families are left grieving their loved ones."
She questioned how many more innocent lives must be lost before the government takes real action.
In a release by the MP, she stated that the people of Moruga/Tableland deserve to feel safe in their own homes, "yet criminals operate without fear of consequence."
MP Benjamin made several recommendations to enact in the community, to make it safer. These include:
-Increased police presence in high-crime areas of Moruga/Tableland. -Better-equipped police stations to ensure swift response times.
-A comprehensive crime plan that addresses the root causes of violence in our rural communities.
She ended the release by emphasising that "the people of Moruga/Tableland will not be ignored any longer. We deserve action, not excuses. I stand with the grieving family in this moment of unimaginable loss, and I will continue to fight for justice and security for all our residents."
