The Cabinet has established a team to conduct a thorough audit of the records, armoury and storage facilities at the Trinidad and Tobago Regiment’s Cumuto Barracks.
This follows Minister of National Security Fitzgerald Hinds raising the matter of an allegation that 25,573 rounds of 5.56 ammunition had “disappeared” from the Cumuto Barracks of the Trinidad and Tobago Regiment.
Following this revelation, the Cabinet put together a five-member team to conduct the investigation:
Colonel (Retired) Lyle Alexander (Co-Chairman)
Mr. Wellington Virgil - Retired Assistant Commissioner of Police
Mr. Martin Murrain - Retired Assistant Commissioner of Police
Colonel (Retired) Michael Clarke
Warrant Officer (Retired) Wayne Ngui
According to a release from the Office of the Prime Minister, per Dr. Keith Rowley's intervention, the team will also include two military officers from CARICOM countries, one of whom will be the team’s co-chair.
The release added, "These members will join from the Guyana Defence Force, as agreed by His Excellency Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali, President of the Co-operative Republic of Guyana and the Jamaica Defence Force, as agreed by The Most Honorable Andrew Holness, Prime Minister of Jamaica."
The Ministry of National Security is also mandated to provide the team with an appropriate Secretariat which will also include one Senior Counsel and one Junior Counsel.
