The 2025 Edition of the Women’s Football League (WoLF) will kick off Saturday with two matches at the Ato Boldon Stadium in Balmain, Couva, from 3 pm.
There will not be an opening ceremony to herald its opening, but rather a gathering of team representatives who will receive tokens for their participation last year, said the WoLF’s Public Relations Officer, Kamile De Gale.
The format will take on a unique structure this season as attempts are underway to eliminate the system of having a Tobago team face a Trinidad team in the final as has been done in the past.
Instead, the tournament will seek to have the best teams square off.
Three groups will make up the composition of the tournament, with a Tobago group featuring Tobago Chicas, Jewels FC, Combined Ballers, and Black Panthers, as well as two Trinidad groups. The first group will see battles among League champs Club Sando, Defence Force, Terminix La Horquetta Rangers, Matura ReUnited, and Trincity Nationals, while Group 2 will be Diego Martin Central, Athletic International Academy (AIA), Pioneers FC, Police, and the University of TT (UTT).
De Gale said from the group stage, each team will play each other twice at home and away before playing five other random teams out of the group for the right to qualify for the Knock Out Play-Offs, which will comprise four teams based on points.
Last year Club Sando claimed the league title by beating AC Port of Spain in the final. Defence Force clinched the third-place prize while Trincity Nationals was fourth. The top three teams will all be rewarded for their efforts on Saturday with checks for $30,000 for the winners, $25,000 for the second-placed team, and $20,000 for the third.
And for the Cup Tournament, the Army Coast Guard Combination women’s team placed first, ahead of Club Sando.
On Sunday, there would also be two matches at the same venue featuring Police and Black Panthers from 2 pm, while two hours later, Defence Force will clash with Tobago Chicas at 4 pm.
De Gale said for the opening matches on Saturday they will monitor the status of the Tobago teams to determine their availability for the matches.
