The Sports Company of T&T (SportTT), in collaboration with the Ministry of Education, has launched a series of track and field workshops aimed at equipping secondary schools’ Physical Education (PE) teachers with the technical skills needed to coach relay events effectively.
The workshops, under the sport in schools programme began at the Hasely Crawford Stadium in Mucurapo, Port-of-Spain on Monday, followed by another with the second session for teachers and coaches from Victoria and Caroni districts at the Manny Ramjohn Stadium in Marabella, yesterday. The programme will end on Friday at the Southern Regional Indoor Sports Arena in Point Fortin.
Senior Coordinator at SporTT, Michelle Alleyne-Penny, highlighted the reason for having the workshop, saying: “We felt it necessary after looking at dear I say, the quality of some of the performances at the Secondary Schools Nationals, to go in and build the capacity in the Physical Education system of the Ministry of Education, so the skills and drills learned here will be taken to the Secondary Schools.”
Alleyne-Penny continued by saying programmes like these are expected to boost the already talented pool of athletes through more consistent coaching methods.
“The teachers’ relay workshop is an initiative where we build the capacity in the school’s system with the PE teachers, they will take back the knowledge and skills and impart that knowledge onto the students and thereby unearthing that talent that we so desperately need,” she said.
The sessions focused on advanced relay techniques, including baton exchange and strategic race planning. The programme seeks to nurture future track and field stars while promoting teamwork and sportsmanship among young athletes.
SporTT, established in 2004 is an organisation that focuses on the development of sports, athletes, and sporting organisations in T&T.
