Re­search by the Uni­ver­si­ty of the West In­dies (The UWI) has con­firmed that the new Unit­ed King­dom and South African vari­ant of the COVID-19 virus is not in cir­cu­la­tion in T&T.

This comes af­ter the Uni­ver­si­ty has been able to suc­cess­ful­ly be­gin rapid ge­nom­ic se­quenc­ing of the COVID-19 virus.

The an­nounce­ment came from pro­fes­sor of mol­e­c­u­lar bi­ol­o­gy at The UWI, Pro­fes­sor Chris­tine Car­ring­ton, at a Min­istry of Health vir­tu­al press con­fer­ence on Mon­day.

She said the sam­ples test­ed came from among those col­lect­ed for di­ag­nos­tic con­fir­ma­tion in Sep­tem­ber and more re­cent ones.
