Unit­ed King­dom (UK) For­eign Sec­re­tary David Lam­my has re­it­er­at­ed Britain’s un­wa­ver­ing sup­port for Guyana’s ter­ri­to­r­i­al in­tegri­ty af­ter a Venezue­lan pa­trol ves­sel on Sat­ur­day vi­o­lat­ed the na­tion’s mar­itime space.

In a state­ment on Sun­day, Lam­my con­demned the provoca­tive act, em­pha­sis­ing the UK’s com­mit­ment to Guyana’s in­ter­na­tion­al­ly recog­nised bor­ders. The For­eign Sec­re­tary called on Venezuela to re­frain from fur­ther ac­tions that un­der­mine Guyana’s sov­er­eign­ty.

“Yes­ter­day, Venezuela vi­o­lat­ed Guyana’s mar­itime ter­ri­to­ry in a provoca­tive act,” Lam­my stat­ed. “The UK is stead­fast in its sup­port for Guyana’s in­ter­na­tion­al­ly recog­nised ter­ri­to­r­i­al in­tegri­ty and urges Venezuela to re­frain from such ac­tions.”

The vi­o­la­tion of Guyana’s mar­itime ter­ri­to­ry has raised con­cerns over the on­go­ing ten­sions be­tween the two neigh­bour­ing coun­tries.

The UK has long been a sup­port­er of Guyana’s rights to its ter­ri­to­ry and con­tin­ues to stand by its po­si­tion on the mat­ter.

He added that  UK’s swift reaf­fir­ma­tion of sup­port sends a strong mes­sage of sol­i­dar­i­ty to Guyana, as the coun­try seeks to pro­tect its sov­er­eign rights against ex­ter­nal chal­lenges.
