The Tobago People’s Party (TPP) has decided not to move forward with nominees Trevor James and Barry Nelson as potential candidates for Tobago West, and has chosen to “consider additional prospects.”
In a press release, the party said following consultations with local action groups, the TPP’s executive directed the Screening Committee to make the move. The party will officially present its two candidates at a special convention on March 23 and has invited all members to attend.
James, the THA’s Infrastructure Secretary, and Nelson were the only nominees screened for Tobago West. Meanwhile, six contenders were considered for Tobago East, including former Assistant Commissioner of Police William Nurse, retired Fire Service head David Thomas, former assemblyman Max James, THA technical adviser Anslem Richards, TPP chairman Ann Second, and William Trim.
The party selected Thomas for Tobago East.
The TPP, which formed in 2023 after breaking away from the Progressive Democratic Patriots (PDP), has been positioning itself as a key player in Tobago’s political landscape. Analysts have suggested the party could play a crucial role in the upcoming general elections, becoming kingmaker depending on its candidates and campaign strategy.
Attempts to get more information from the party proved futile yesterday.
