Siparia Mayor Doodnath Mayrhoo is threatening to sue a Central businessman for making alleged defamatory statements against him on social media.
Mayrhoo, through his attorney Richard Jaggasar, yesterday sent the pre-action protocol letter to Shane Mahabirsingh, owner of Bilda Boyz Construction Services Ltd.
In the letter, the attorney stated that the defamatory statements were allegedly made on his social media account on February 19, 2025.
“You have no justification, reasonable or otherwise for the defamatory post. My client is not the subject of any criminal investigation or investigation of any kind and therefore your post is wholly unjustifiable. There are no allegations of any nature that would lead to my client being (“locked up”) held/detained/questioned by the police. Your averment therefore is again wholly unjustifiable.”
The attorney added that the post was made maliciously, recklessly, and with no attempt to verify its truthfulness.
“My client is a long-standing public servant and the current Mayor of Siparia, with an unblemished record of public service. The defamatory statement and the public reaction to it have harmed my client’s reputation by falsely associating him with criminal activity and corruption. The post has resulted in reputational damage, distress, and unnecessary public scrutiny,” he further stated.
Calling on Mahabirsingh to immediately cease and desist from making any negative comments about the mayor, Jaggassar opined that this matter ought to be resolved amicably and expeditiously.
Failure to do so, Jaggassar said, would result in the filing of a claim for defamation seeking a written apology published on the social media platforms; an injunction restraining him from redistributing any defamatory voice note messages or any social media posts and general damages for defamation.
Mahabirsingh has 28 days to respond.
