Political analyst Dr Indira Rampersad predicts that the highly anticipated election date will be revealed on Sunday, coinciding with Prime Minister Dr Keith Rowley’s official resignation. She made the statement when she was interviewed on CNC3’s The Morning Brew.
Last week, Guardian Media exclusively reported that the People’s National Movement’s (PNM) 2025 election candidates will be unveiled at a rally on Sunday. The event is scheduled for 2 pm at Woodford Square, Port of Spain, where the party is expected to present its slate of candidates for the upcoming general election. This was later confirmed by PNM Chairman and Prime Minister-in-waiting Stuart Young.
Senior government sources have also indicated that the general election is likely to be held at the end of April. According to the Constitution, Parliament serves a five-year term, concluding in August, with a 90-day window thereafter for the election to be called. However, the President has the authority to dissolve Parliament earlier, acting on the advice of the Prime Minister.
While speculation continues regarding whether Young will formally announce the election date, Rampersad is confident that Sundsy’s event could serve as a dual reveal—confirming both the new PNM candidates and the nation’s next election day.
“I have a feeling come Sunday when the PM passes the baton to Young, he is going to announce also the dissolution of Parliament and perhaps give the date for the election,” she said.
