Police are awaiting forensic autopsy findings to help determine how a mother and her teenage daughter died after their burnt remains were discovered at their Malick home on Friday afternoon, as investigators remain uncertain about the original motive behind the incident.
The victims have been identified as Rosanna Ramlal, 47, a doubles vendor, and her daughter, Alina Ramlal, 17, a student, of 7th Avenue, Malick, Barataria.
Police and fire officers responded to reports of a fire at the house.
After extinguishing the blaze, firefighters discovered the remains of the mother and daughter on a bed in a bedroom.
The fire was confined to a bedroom on the southern side of the house. A quantity of ammunition was also found at the scene and processed by crime scene investigators.
While there have been claims that the mother and daughter were victims of a home invasion, police have not confirmed such reports.
Instead police said the cause and circumstances of the deaths remain under investigation, with the awaited forensic autopsy findings expected to help establish how the mother and daughter died.
Officers of the Region One Homicide Bureau of Investigations are continuing enquiries, while fire officials are also investigating the blaze.
