Licensing officers are expected to today inspect the music truck that crushed a reveller to death on Carnival Monday in San Fernando.
The incident claimed the life of 79-year-old Selwyn Little also known as “Shortman” of Mon Repos.
Little was holding the banner for D Jammerz International Military Mas in front of the truck on Coffee Street, but as they entered Cipero Street, the truck rolled over Little. He died on the spot. The truck eventually stopped a distance away and was impounded at the San Fernando Police Station. The 43-year-old driver of Friendship Village, San Fernando, was detained by the police, questioned and released later that day, police said.
Meanwhile, condolences continued to pour in on social media for Little who was a stalwart in San Fernando. In a social media post, D’ Jammerz offered to assist the family in any way possible and in another post the San Fernando Carnival Committee paid tribute to Little.
“He was also no stranger to the Trinbagonian cultural fraternity and San Fernando Carnival, having been part of the Joey Lewis Band and D’ Jammerz International Military Mas Band. He was a beacon of joy, kindness, and community spirit. His warmth, helpfulness and unwavering dedication to making our celebrations special will never be forgotten. His presence lit up the season and his absence will be deeply felt by all who had the privilege of knowing him.”
Police said the truck would have passed the requirements to be on the road on Carnival Monday and Tuesday. Licensing officers, however, will examine it today and the findings will assist investigators in determining the direction of their probe.
Little’s autopsy is expected to be done on Friday.
