Op­po­si­tion Leader Kam­la Per­sad-Bisses­sar has ac­cused the gov­ern­ment of al­low­ing their sup­port­ers to en­ter the coun­try through “the back door” to vote.

Per­sad-Bisses­sar made the claim while briefly ad­dress­ing sup­port­ers at the open­ing of the Unit­ed Na­tion­al Con­gress (UNC) Moru­ga/Table­land Con­stituen­cy of­fice at St Mary’s Vil­lage, Moru­ga yes­ter­day.

The UNC has se­lect­ed Michelle Ben­jamin, a coun­cil­lor at the Princes Town Re­gion­al Cor­po­ra­tion, to fight the seat which is present­ly held by the Peo­ple’s Na­tion­al Move­ment (PNM).

Dressed in a black suit and a yel­low shirt, for­mer PNM gov­ern­ment min­is­ter Pe­ter Tay­lor warm­ly greet­ed Per­sad-Bisses­sar when she ar­rived at the venue.

Per­sad-Bisses­sar who had called for na­tion­als strand­ed abroad to be al­lowed to re­turn home to vote in the gen­er­al elec­tion said that de­ci­sion lies in the hands of the gov­ern­ment.

“Whilst I do not call to open the bor­ders, I leave that for the med­ical peo­ple to tell us what is the best thing to do, in the best in­ter­est of the health of the coun­try. At the same time, they can­not be bring­ing peo­ple through the back door, bring­ing their sup­port­ers to vote.”

She promised to pay spe­cial at­ten­tion to this is­sue.

Per­sad-Bisses­sar al­so said that by to­day she will have the doc­u­ments per­tain­ing to the con­tro­ver­sial vis­it of Vice Pres­i­dent Del­cy Ro­driguez-led Venezue­lan con­tin­gent af­ter the bor­ders were closed in March due to the COVID-19 pan­dem­ic.

Not­ing that this was of great con­cern, she promised to share the doc­u­ments with the pub­lic.
