The investigation into the circumstances surrounding a deadly fire that claimed the lives of D’Abadie/O’Meara MP and Minister in the Ministry of Education, Lisa Morris-Julian, 48, and two of her children and the response of the Fire Service has been completed.
The findings, compiled in a comprehensive report, have been submitted to the Ministry of National Security for review by Minister Fitzgerald Hinds.
This was confirmed yesterday to Guardian Media by Roosevelt Bruce, former Chief Fire Officer and chairman of the three-member investigative committee appointed by the ministry. Bruce, however, declined to reveal the date of completion.
“It’s with the Ministry of National Security. It was submitted. I really don’t want to say much. In fact, all I want to say is that it was submitted, and they have it,” Bruce stated.
Acting Chief Fire Officer Andy Hutchinson also confirmed that the Fire Service had conducted its own investigation and submitted its findings to Bruce’s committee.
“We completed our full report, which forms part of the evidence for the committee. I’m not at liberty to disclose the results of our investigation until the committee reports to the minister. Once that happens, it won’t be an issue to share, but for now, I can’t divulge any information,” Hutchinson said.
The committee, comprising Bruce, Kurt Cadet (Chairman of the Occupational Safety and Health Authority), and Ashti Mahabir (an attorney in the Office of the Attorney General and Legal Affairs), was tasked with examining the Fire Service’s handling of the December 16, 2024, fire at Morris-Julian’s home on Farfan Street, Arima.
The team was appointed on December 20, 2024.
The investigation was initially expected to be completed within two weeks. Minister Hinds had previously assured the public that the findings would be made available once finalised.
However, efforts to reach Hinds for comment on the report were unsuccessful, as calls to his phone went unanswered.
