From a single ice-cream cart and a dream to a thriving storefront in Brooklyn’s Little Caribbean, the story of Mr P’s is as much about family as it is about frozen treats.
At the heart of the business is a father-and-sons partnership that has transformed Patrick “Mr P” Victor’s lifelong passion for making ice cream into a growing enterprise, with sons Dwayne Regrello and Shaquille Victor helping to carry the vision forward.
Located at 1397 Nostrand Avenue in Flatbush, Brooklyn, New York, Mr P’s proudly celebrates its Trinidad and Tobago roots while serving customers from across the community. Their message is simple: “Best Trinidadian ice cream in Brooklyn and the world, rooted in our culture!”
The family business traces its origins to Mr P’s migration to the US in 1966.
“From humble beginnings, it started with one ice-cream cart and a dream, and a passion for crafting unique and delightful flavours for vegans and non-vegans alike,” revealed Mr P.
“This developed into a storefront opened with my sons in 2022.
“I combined their shared love for ice cream to bring joy to our community. Dwayne handles the entrepreneurial aspects, while Shaquille leads social media efforts, and together we strive to create delicious, one-of-a-kind flavours for everyone’s enjoyment. We’re three kings on a mission.”
Mr P excitedly declared that Dwayne is the face of Mr P’s, a dad-and-sons enterprise.
Regrello said working alongside his father has become one of the most rewarding aspects of his life.
“Ours is ice cream. I take pride in being the face of my dad’s business,” he stated.
The father-and-son bond that drives the enterprise is rooted in values that were instilled in Dwayne from childhood. When he was just four years old, he regularly accompanied his mother, Dionne Regrello, as she fed street dwellers.
His mother recalled his constant smiles, fondness for serving and feeding others, leadership skills, and sadness whenever there was not enough food for everyone.
“Mommy, cook more food,” he pleaded.
Born in Trinidad and educated initially at Point Fortin RC School before continuing his schooling in the United States, Regrello eventually found his calling in hospitality. Although he briefly pursued another passion, music, hospitality ultimately won.
That experience now helps shape the customer-focused culture at Mr P’s.
“My dad resumed making ice cream during COVID. I decided to share it on my social media and create a page. I eventually started doing deliveries every weekend after work; events and catering followed. My dad then found a location for rent on Nostrand Avenue. The store officially started with my father, my brother, his wife, and myself. I’m the manager.”
The family’s homemade offerings include a wide range of frozen desserts, among them the still-rare charcoal ice cream that has become one of their distinctive products.
Looking ahead, he has ambitious plans for the family brand.
“I envision expanding across the US, then internationally. I carefully scan employees, and every day, me and my dad produce fresh ice-cream. We stand out because of Trinidad and our uniqueness and service.”
Beyond the ice cream itself, Regrello hopes the business can inspire stronger relationships between fathers and sons.
“Even though my dad and I may not always see eye-to-eye on everything, I love that I can help him accomplish his goal…. I’ve been in hospitality for 10-plus years so it comes like second nature to me.”
Regrello’s mother said she remains proud of the man her son has become.
Regrello is also the brother of Danielle, grandson of former San Fernando mayor Junia Regrello through his mother, and nephew of last year’s Guinness World Record holder pan player and first person to play pan on The Great Wall of China, Joshua Regrello.
For Dwayne, however, the greatest source of pride remains working alongside his father and helping to build the family legacy.
“Fathers do right! Sons do right and cherish your father! While I deeply love and appreciate my family, pertaining to my dad, he’s special. The recipes are all his, and I love showing him off. He’s a pretty fly guy who looks good on camera and on products. We ‘trust the vibes’.”
