AHMEDABAD – Despite a cameo from Sherfane Rutherford, the Gujarat Titans still went down by 11 runs to the Punjab Kings when the Indian Premier League (IPL) continued on Tuesday.
Playing at the Narendra Modi Stadium, the Kings were led to victory by captain and Player-of-the-Match Shreyas Iyer, who smashed an unbeaten 97 from 42 balls with nine sixes and five fours, and whose innings was the backbone of their massive 243 for five from their 20 overs.
Opener Priyansh Arya scored 47 from 23 balls and Shashank Singh blasted an unbeaten 44 from 16 balls, to help the Kings plunder 77 runs from the last five overs.
Left-arm spinner Sai Kishore grabbed 3-30 for the Titans.
In their run chase, the Titans got good contributions from their top four, but could only muster 232 for five in their 20 overs.
Opener Sai Sudharsan topscored with 74 from 41 balls, Jos Buttler made 54 from 33, Rutherford made 46 from 28 balls after coming on as a substitute, and captain Shubman Gill scored 33 from 14 deliveries.
Needing an improbable 27 runs from the final over for a memorable victory, medium pacer Arshdeep Singh conceded just 15 runs while also grabbing Rutherford’s wicket to seal the deal.
