Thornton remains in Tranquillity triple crown hunt

Lee-Anne Thorn­ton re­mained on course to se­cure the triple crown in this year’s Sun­shine Snacks Tran­quil­li­ty Open Ten­nis Tour­na­ment when she booked a spot in the Women’s Open Sin­gles semi­fi­nal at the club’s courts on Vic­to­ria Av­enue, Port-of-Spain, on Monday.

The win­ner of the Mixed Dou­bles ti­tle with her hus­band, An­drew Thorn­ton, over Ni­rav Dougdeen and Madi­son Khan, 6-3, 7-5, on Sun­day, and the Women’s Dou­bles crown with Cameron Wong af­ter beat­ing Farah Chau­ti­lal and Cather­ine Camp­bell-Frost 6-1, 6-4, on Thurs­day, Thorn­ton made light work of Sav­it­ree Singh, 6-0, 6-1, in their Sin­gles quar­ter­fi­nal.

Next up for Thorn­ton is a semi­fi­nal against third-ranked un­seed­ed Khan, who de­feat­ed third seed Chau­ti­lal 6-3, 6-2, while the oth­er semi­fi­nal will fea­ture fourth-ranked Camp­bell-Frost and sec­ond-ranked Wong af­ter their wins over Karis­sa Mo­hammed 6-1, 6-1, and Cyra Ram­cha­ran 3-6, 6-1, 6-4, re­spec­tive­ly.

This, af­ter Karis­sa Mo­hammed/Camp­bell-Frost beat Karis­sa Mo­hammed/Camp­bell-Frost in their quar­ter­fi­nal, while Wong crushed Cyra Ram­cha­ran.

In the lone re­main­ing men’s sin­gles last-16 match-up, top-ranked An­drew Thorn­ton whipped Oliv­er Har­ra­gin 6-1, 6-0 to book a quar­ter­fi­nal ver­sus eighth-ranked Dun­stan De­noon Tues­day from 3.30 pm.

In the oth­er quar­ter­fi­nals to­day, fourth-ranked Zach­ery Byng faces his men’s dou­bles win­ning part­ner and sixth-ranked Ke­shan Moonasar; Ethan Am­mon meets third-ranked Vaughn Wil­son; and sev­enth-ranked Seve Day comes up against sec­ond-ranked Kale Dal­la Cos­ta.
