A goal on each side of the half ensured that Athletics Club Port-of-Spain (AC PoS) maintained the top spot in the Trinidad Group of the T&T Women’s Football League (TTWoLF) when they defeated Point Pioneers 2-0 at the training ground of the Mannie Ramjohn Stadium in Marabella Saturday (May 9) afternoon.
Meanwhile, defending champion Club Sando FC could only add one point to their tally, moving to 17 points courtesy of a goalless draw with the University of T&T (UTT) at the training ground of the Ato Boldon Stadium in Balmain, Couva.
Already holding a clear advantage over their opponents, the AC Port-of-Spain women dominated the match, with Emily Nanton firing them ahead for a 1-0 lead in the first half. After the break, national striker Aaliyah Prince netted the insurance goal late in the second half.
The result pushed AC Port-of-Spain to 29 points, seven points ahead of their closest rivals, UTT, whose goalless tie moved them to 22 points.
Recently, AC PoS coach Gilbert Bateau noted that his team has only just started to gel as a unit despite their strong form so far. They defeated second-placed UTT 4-0 last week at the Phase II Recreation Ground in La Horquetta.
The "Capital City Women" have been in cruise control, bolstered by several T&T senior national players on their roster.
“We had a few players involved with the national women’s team set-up, including Aaliyah Prince, Asha James, Shaunalee Govia, Naomi Guerra, Aaliyah Trim, Tyanna Williams, Nicolette Craig, and Summer Arjoon, and in recent matches they have really worked and helped us to be at the top of the table,” stated Bateau, a former national World Cup youth team technical staff member.
