Queen’s Park Cricket Club (QPCC) Red Force batsman Jyd Goolie blasted 165 on day one against Bess Motors Marchin Patriots at the Queen’s Park Oval in St Clair, Port-of-Spain Saturday, in Round Seven of the T&T Cricket Board Premier Division One.
Batting at number three, Goolie faced the second ball of the innings after the dismissal of Tion Webster, caught by Evin Lewis off the bowling of Teshawn Castro.
Kyle Ramdoo also failed to trouble the scorers and was second out with the score on four, trapped leg-before-wicket to Rivaldo Ramlogan.
In a battle between two teams that lost their Weekday 30-Overs semifinals this past midweek, Queen’s Park slipped into further trouble when they lost West Indies batsman Amir Jangoo for 11, caught by former youth prodigy Kirstan Kallicharan for Ramlogan’s second wicket.
T&T Red Force captain, out-of-favour West Indies wicketkeeper Joshua Da Silva stayed with Goolie for a partnership of 55 and took the score from 28 for three and took them to 83 for four.
Da Silva hit three boundaries and faced only 41 balls as he seemed untroubled by the Patriots’ attack, without Kashtri Singh, who sat out this encounter.
Da Silva, who led T&T to the inaugural Breakout League title last year, was finally outdone by national teammate Joshua James and was caught by youth player Matheus Komal. The hosts were 83 for four at that point.
QPCC needed a big partnership to put up a big total, especially as Patriots’ Evin Lewis has shown to be in rich form this season, having scored a respective double ton and a century in back-to-back matches heading into this weekend’s match-up.
Yannic Cariah provided support for Goolie, who was now on 39, to get a partnership going. Together they stayed for 111 runs across 169 balls. Cariah was superior in the partnership with 61 runs before he was dismissed, while Goolie contributed 49 and moved to 88.
Cariah hit six sixes in his 61 from 98 balls and was caught by Lewis for Ricky Jaipaul’s first wicket. The tall spinner took four for 80 from 23 overs and continued his good run of form with the ball despite not having his ‘twin spin partner’ Kashtri Singh with him.
After Cariah’s dismissal, Goolie found support from Khary Pierre (15) and raised his century during the partnership, but Presentation College San Fernando’s captain, Brendan Boodoo capped off a good week with the wickets of Pierre and Mikkel Govia to finish with two for 29 from seven overs after leading his school and South-East Zone Under-19 to title wins earlier in the week.
Goolie literally ran out of partners as Queen’s Park were eventually bowled out for 324 with Goolie unbeaten on 165. Goolie, who was called up to the West Indies for their series in Ireland last year but never made it to the European country, faced 206 balls and hit 17 fours and three sixes in his innings.
At the close of play, the Patriots were 32 without loss in the 12th over.
