Maikea Bramble impressed in the shooting circle, scoring all of the University of the West Indies’ (UWI) goals but her team was on the losing end in a competitive contest against MIC Tigers in the opening match of the Jean Pierre Challenge for teams in the Championship Division in the Courts All Sectors Netball League.
The goal-shooter shot with 92 per cent accuracy, netting 46 goals from 50 attempts but UWI fell to a heartbreaking one-goal defeat, 47-46, to be eliminated from the Knockout competition at the Eastern Regional Indoor Sports Arena in Tacarigua on Sunday afternoon.
Bramble helped her team recover after being down in the first two quarters, an eight-goal (16-8) deficit in the opening stanza but closed in 26-23 at the half in the four 15-minute-a-quarter contest.
MIC, led by the shooting of goal-shooter Tiffany Gonzales 34/51 and goal-attack Elisha Ramkissoon, fought back in the third to take a narrow two-goal (35-33) advantage heading into the fourth quarter. UWI refused to go away though and rallied back to outscore the Tigers, 13-12, but it was not enough and had to settle for the one-goal defeat.
Gonzales finished with 34 goals from 51 attempts and Elisha Ramkissoon 13 in 22 tries to see their team move on to face Defence Force, who was on a bye in the opening round, in the semifinals.
Later, Bermudez booked its spot in the semifinal round after easily defeating Police Netball Youth Club (PNYC), 60-21. The quarter scores read 14-2 in the first, 28-8 at halftime and 44-13 in the third all in favour of Bermudez, thanks to the shooting of Nekeisha Gomes, who scored a match-high 51 in 62 before sealing the huge 39-goal win.
Zakiya McKenna and Jocelyn Marcelle, who shared the goal-attack bib, scored two and seven from five and nine tries, respectively, for the winner.
For PNYC, goal-attack Kaliyah Cooper led with 11 off and goal-shooter Cheryse James added the other 10 goals from 21 attempts.
Bermudez moves on to meet the winner between the University of T&T (UTT) and Police in their first-round match-up which takes place tomorrow at 6.45 pm.
The Alternative Division’s knockout competition also started on Sunday but only one of the four matches scheduled was played, the others defaulted.
Goal-shooter Karissa Grant scored 16 off 25 to guide Fire to a 19-14 win over the University of the Southern Caribbean (USC) in the 15-minute-a-half match. The Fire team advances to the semifinals to face PNYC, who won after TT Post forfeited.
The other semifinalists are UTC and Defence Force, who also progressed after their respective opponents, Police and UTT, forfeited their matches.
Action in both divisional knockout competitions continues tomorrow from 5.30 pm.
