WPC Quianna Mahabir’s condition has continued to steadily improve and she is now speaking.
A senior police officer said yesterday that the 30-year-old had been taken off the ventilator on Thursday and had been breathing on her own.
“She is now recognizing people and talking.”
Mahabir continues to be surrounded by immediate family members who have maintained a steady diet of prayers and positive energy at the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex, Mt Hope.
Mahabir, who is assigned to the T&T Police Service (TTPS) Band as a drummer, was shot several times during a suspected carjacking at her home at Hydraulic Road, Kelly Village, Caroni, around 1.35 am on October 22.
She had been part of an all-female contingent representing the TTPS Band, that returned to the country on Monday night following a 12-day music tour of the Bahamas and New Jersey.
Senior officials in the Central Division provided an update on the investigation on Thursday, as they revealed that several persons of interest had been questioned so far in relation to robberies of other people.
They attributed the attack and subsequent shooting of Mahabir, to that of a botched robbery - as no evidence collected to date, seemed to suggest otherwise.
