UNC Chairman Davendranath Tancoo is complaining the Council for Responsible Political Behaviour, which the party withdrew from in January, has "no legal authority" over its affairs and should refrain from any commentary about its conduct.
It's also accusing the Council of "election interference," warning that any reference to the party in the Council’s public statements could mislead voters and unfairly influence the upcoming election.
In a letter addressed to the Council's Chairman, Dr. Bishnu Ragoonath, the UNC objects to remarks made by the Council in the media on March 18, 2025, regarding the monitoring of political parties that are not signatories to the Council. The UNC states that it withdrew from the Council on January 30 and advises that the Council "not make reference to the UNC in any way, shape or form, as this would amount to election interference."
The party further argues that the Council "is not a Statutory or official body and, accordingly, has no legal authority over our party." It warns that any statements from the Council referring to the UNC could be "interpreted by the public as an official or quasi-official statement" regarding the party’s electoral conduct, which "may influence voter behaviour accordingly." The UNC asserts that this "would be misleading and would amount to election interference."
The Council officially announced on March 19 that it had begun monitoring the 2025 election campaign, tasked with evaluating "ALL political parties, candidates, and their supporters" for adherence to ethical standards. The Council, which has operated since 2014, invites the public to report breaches of its Code of Ethical Political Conduct and publishes weekly updates on its findings.
