There were reports of men being shot in two separate unrelated incidents in Morvant and Barataria, both of which fall under the North Eastern Division.

In the most recent incident, a 44-year-old man was shot in his hand while helping a friend in Morvant on Friday night.

Police said the man was helping a friend with mechanic work on a car, at Almond Drive, at around 11.20 pm when a white Nissan AD Wagon drove near them. Gunmen in the car shot at the men who ran away.

The mechanic was shot once in his left hand and was taken to hospital by residents. Morvant police and officers of the North Eastern Division Crime Scene Investigation (NED CSI) Unit visited the scene and found 11 spent 7.62 shells, eight 9 mm spent shells and a 40 calibre spent shell at the scene.

Hours earlier on Friday afternoon, a 35-year-old Rio Claro man drove on the Eastern Main Road, Barataria, near the Eastern Credit Union. The man drove into a car park but was confronted by a gunman who shot the victim as he remained sitting in the car.

Passers by took the wounded man to hospital where he underwent emergency surgery. Investigators were unable to get further details from the wounded man due to his condition. Officers of the NED CSI Unit visited the scene and found three rounds of 9 mm ammunition.

On Friday, the Eastern Credit Union through a statement confirmed that the shooting happened near their Barataria branch, but denied social media reports that the victim used their facilities
