The state of emergency has been extended for a further three months, after the motion was passed in Parliament on Monday night with full opposition support.

Opposition Leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar signaled her support during her contribution.

“I say to you, I will not object to these motions,” said Opposition Leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar. “But I do not believe it will succeed, because nothing this government touches succeeds.”

Prime Minister Rowley said the extension was necessary to give the police a chance to continue their work. He said by not having a curfew, the average citizen was able to move about as normal, and small businesses especially could continue to work unhindered.

“We need to extend the state of emergency, as tailored as it is, as unobtrusive as it is to the law-abiding citizen, let’s extend it for another three months and hopefully at the end of that three months we have made some significant progress,” Prime Minister Dr Keith Rowley said as he wrapped up the debate.

At the end of the three months, Parliament can meet again to approve a one-time extension of a further three months. A state of emergency cannot last more than six months.
