A 19-year-old man was killed and his moth­er in­jured af­ter they were am­bushed and shot on Tues­day in Bel­mont.

Ac­cord­ing to a po­lice re­port, Nigel Latch­man, a res­i­dent of Up­per St Fran­cois Val­ley Road, was trav­el­ling in his moth­er’s car near Low­er St Barb’s Road when an­oth­er ve­hi­cle ob­struct­ed their path, gun­men emerged and fired on them.

Latch­man was shot and was tak­en to the Port-of-Spain Gen­er­al Hos­pi­tal but lat­er suc­cumbed to his in­juries. His 39-year-old moth­er, who was dri­ving at the time, sus­tained an in­jury to her left hand.

In­ves­ti­ga­tors are treat­ing the in­ci­dent as tar­get­ed and linked to on­go­ing crim­i­nal ac­tiv­i­ty in the area.

This killing was record­ed as the 4th for the year as com­pared to 18 for the same pe­ri­od last year.
