A 21-year-old man is in po­lice cus­tody af­ter try­ing to run away from of­fi­cers over un­paid traf­fic tick­ets on Tues­day af­ter­noon.

Po­lice said of­fi­cers of the In­ter-Agency Task Force (IATF) con­duct­ed a stop-and-search ex­er­cise around Queen’s Park Sa­van­nah at 12.30 am when they stopped a white 12-seater Nis­san Car­a­van.

As po­lice were is­su­ing a fixed penal­ty no­tice, the man drove off around the Sa­van­nah and in­to the car park of the Port of Spain Gen­er­al Hos­pi­tal be­fore get­ting out of the ve­hi­cle and run­ning.

Po­lice chased and caught him, ar­rest­ing him af­ter a brief strug­gle.

Of­fi­cers said the man had 16 sanc­tions or un­paid traf­fic tick­ets for pre­vi­ous of­fences.
