Opposition Leder Kamla Persad-Bissessar has written a letter to Prime Minister Stuart Young requesting independent international election observers for the upcoming 2025 General Elections.

But yesterday, the Opposition Leader claimed her renewed call followed former prime minister Dr Keith Rowley’s dismissive response to the initial request. Last December, former prime minister Rowley said he had written to the Caribbean Community (Caricom) requesting election observers. In January, it was announced that Caricom accepted the request and said an observer mission would be sent for the polls.

But yesterday, Persad-Bissessar claimed there several issues she raised in her letter to Young, including a conflict of interest with the Assistant Secretary-General of Caricom, Elizabeth Solomon, being the wife of former Attorney General, Reginald Armour and what she claimed were unaddressed long-standing concerns about the EBC.
