Opposition Leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar has questioned whether the ongoing State of Emergency (SoE) which was called exactly a month ago was to implement a gun amnesty "to save other government officials who are also under investigation?"
Her statement came after it emerged Police Commissioner Erla Harewood-Christopher is reportedly being questioned by investigators at her office at the Police Administration Building in Port-of-Spain.
Investigators arrived at the building around 10 a.m. The investigation is believed to be related to the importation of two sniper rifles for the Strategic Services Agency, sources tell Guardian Media.
In a statement to Guardian Media, Persad-Bissessar said, "This is no surprise to myself or anyone that looked at my speech during the UNC MNF on January 6th. Citizens should ask if the real reason for the SoE was to implement a gun amnesty to save other government officials who are also under investigation which backfired because their dunce AG did not know that he would have had to come to parliament for a special majority to implement it."
She added, "The government has collapsed. They must call an election. We will meet them on the “anenue”."
