San Fernando Mayor Robert Parris proclaimed September 7 as Ian Atherly Day in honour of his service to San Fernando.
Atherly, a former mayor, national cyclist, and businessman, will also be the first San Fernando hero to be honoured in November for City Month.
Atherly is the country’s first Commonwealth bronze medallist in cycling. He was awarded his medal by King Charles (then Prince).
He served as the Mayor of San Fernando from 2003 to 2005, served as PLIPDECO chairman and was involved in the insurance business.
Atherly will be one of the heroes honoured in the City’s 36th Anniversary for the Heroes and Military Day parade on November 23.
Another hero to be honoured on that day is Hasely Crawford, the country’s first Olympic champion.
“The children of today in San Fernando must go back to basics, and that meant having Civic Pride in knowing those who paved the way for them to be here today,” said the mayor. —SASCHA WILSON
