Queen’s Park Cricket Club president, Dr Nigel Camacho, has praised the Trinidad and Tobago Fire Service (TTFS) for their swift response to a fire at the Queen’s Park Oval.
Yesterday morning, videos circulated on social media showing smoke rising from the Shell Corporate Booth at the historic cricket grounds in Port-of-Spain.
When Guardian Media arrived at the scene, Camacho explained that initial assessments suggested that the fire had spread through the air-conditioning ducts, connecting the Shell corporate booth and the NLCB booth.
Camacho said he became aware of the fire through already circulating videos that were sent to him by friends.
“I ran across and spoke to the head of security. He indicated that the Fire Service was already here and that things were already starting to be under control,” Camacho told Guardian Media at the Oval.
“I personally was very heartened to hear about the quick response and getting everything under control, for minimal damage.”
Fire officers from Wrightson Road Headquarters and Four Roads reportedly arrived at the recreational grounds within minutes of being alerted, alongside the Trinidad and Tobago Electricity Commission (T&TEC) and a water truck provided by the Water and Sewerage Authority (WASA).
Camacho confirmed that while the Shell Booth saw significant damage, at the NLCB Booth there was minimal damage. No injuries were reported.
He dismissed rumours of any postponements or cancellations of CPL games scheduled for 2025.
The cause of the fire has not yet been determined.
