Police intend to increase security measures in Belmont, even as investigators continue inquiries into the murders of two men in the community on Saturday night.
Police said Steven Chuniesingh, 18, and Ian Thomas, 54, were gunned down on Collins Road at 11.15 pm.
Chuniesingh’s body was found on the street, while Thomas’ body was found in the front passenger side seat of a silver pick-up.
Chuniesingh was from Tumpuna Road, Arima, while Thomas was from Charuma Village, Biche.
During a police media TTPS briefing yesterday, ACP North-West and Special Operations Richard Smith said Homicide investigators were working closely with officers from the Port-of-Spain Division, Northern Division North and Eastern Division to share information on potential leads. He noted that officers were working on a “theory” but did not divulge further information.
The murders of Chuniesingh and Thomas brought the number of persons killed in Belmont to four for the year thus far.
Asked if any further resources would be added to strengthen the police presence in Belmont, Smith said they would intensify operations in the area and maintained police were doing their best to suppress crime.
“Any murder is too much for us. We know we are in an SoE and persons would expect there would be no murders, we expect that as well, but they are happening. We are trying out best,” Smith said.
“Rome wasn’t built in a day, but we are working assiduously in getting there as it relates to murders and other violent crimes.”
Relatives who showed up at the Forensic Science Centre, St James, for Chuniesingh’s autopsy yesterday, declined to speak with media.
Police from the Homicide Bureau of Investigations Region I are continuing enquiries into both murders.
