Cocal/Mafeking councillor Renelle Kisoon yesterday called for road safety measures at Grand Lagoon junction in Mayaro, where the accident that took the life of Sirita Mohammed occurred last week.
Kissoon made the call during Mohammed’s funeral at the Grace Fellowship Family Church in Mafeking Village. Kisoon said she grew up next door to Mohammed and considered her an aunt.
Mohammed, 45, a mother of three, was standing at Grand Lagoon Junction with her son Daniel, 23, when she was struck and dragged by an SUV.
Kisoon said she was shocked and shaken at the way Mohammed was killed and called for immediate action to enhance safety at the junction, noting that Mohammed’s death was not an isolated incident.
“As we mourn today, I must use this moment to renew our call for swift and decisive action to improve our road safety in Trinidad and Tobago and Mayaro,” she said.
Kisoon called for safety measures, including traffic lights and pedestrian crossings, to prevent further tragedies.
She told Mohammed’s family that she and her colleagues at the Mayaro Rio Claro Regional Corporation, along with Mayaro MP Rushton Paray, are committed to advocating for justice for those affected by accidents at that location and said Mohammed will be deeply missed for her kindness, faith, and love.
Mohammed’s daughters Shemaiah, 15, and Sheariah,13, spoke about their mother’s unwavering love and devotion. Shemaiah described her as “a beam of light who kept everyone warm” and expressed the profound impact of her loss.
“You were the best advisor, comforter, friend and mother. If I had to say anymore it would take the whole day. Your love for us was amazing and selfless,” she said.
“I just want you to know that no one can ever take your place. You are in my heartbeat forever.”
Following the service, burial took place at the Radix Public Cemetery.
A motorist has been questioned by police about the accident and investigations are continuing.
