The Association of Caribbean Media Workers has joined the region in mourning the death of Jones P. Madeira.

In a statement on Saturday morning, ACM hailed Madeira's decades of service to the Caribbean media.

They singled out his contribution during the 1990 attempted coup as the voice that revealed it to the nation and the world.

ACM said, "During those terrible days until the August 1st surrender, he served as a voice of information and calm via measured broadcasts while also facilitating mediated conversations between the insurgents and the security forces."

The association also paid tribute to Madeira, who they say served as a mentor to a generation of Caribbean journalists.

Madeira died on Friday at 3:33pm at the age of 80. His family said he was ailing for some time.
