Minutes after cashing a cheque for $380,000 from a bank in Siparia for his employer, a worker was robbed at gunpoint on Monday.
Police said the 31-year-old victim is a sales clerk employed with Phototronics Ltd, which also houses a MoneyGram outlet on Daisy Voisin Street.
The money represented funds for transactions at MoneyGram, according to police.
The employee went to Republic Bank at High Street around noon, where he cashed the cheque and placed the money in a black backpack. His employer’s husband was waiting for him in a Honda Vezel, and together they headed back to the workplace.
However, around 1.15 pm, while proceeding along Mary Street towards Daisy Voisin Street, a silver Nissan Tiida pulled in front of their vehicle.
Three suspects alighted, dressed in long-sleeve green coveralls and ski masks, and armed with a firearm and a hammer. They approached the vehicle and demanded the money. The suspects grabbed the bag containing the cash and re-entered the Tiida, which sped off.
Sgt Tai Kan and PC Ramoutar responded, and the area was canvassed for CCTV footage. However, neither the getaway car, the suspects, nor the money were found.
Inquiries are ongoing.
