Rubidari Victor’s exhibition, Anansi and The Infinite Jouvay, ran from January 23-29 at the LOFTT Gallery on Rosalino Street, Woodbrook. It included paintings, postcards, prints, T-shirts, and dolls.
It also featured the launch of the third novel in his best-selling New Adventures of Anansi series—Anansi in the Land of Monsters and Other Stories.
Anansi—the trickster spider, is a popular Caribbean folklore hero and a symbol of our storytelling heritage. The character was created by the Ashanti people of Ghana in West Africa, and the stories crossed the Atlantic Ocean during the horrors of plantation slavery.
A handful of the stories survived the brutality of the plantation and thrived in the Caribbean where Anansi is celebrated as a symbol of resistance and survival.
Victor’s Anansi novels are part of a 21-book epic featuring three generations of the Anansi family. The first seven books feature the adventures of Anansi’s grandmother as a young spider; the next seven books feature Anansi’s father; and the final seven books chronicle the Anansi we all know and love.
Victor’s Anansi novels are some of T&T’s top best sellers. The first book, Anansi and the 10 Dragons, has sold out six printings.
The books are meant for ages six and up but Victor stresses that, like Harry Potter, adults can read the book and get yet another level of thrill, sophistication, and layers of meaning from it,
“Finally, the trilogy is complete!” Victor said.
All three books—Anansi and the 10 Dragons, Anansi and the Book Of Night and Anansi in the Land of Monsters & Other Stories will be available at booksellers nationwide; or directly from the author. He delivers the books and merchandise personally and will sign them. The team also ships products overseas.
