Shot putter Peyton Winter is Team TTO’s first medallist on Day 2 of the 53rd CARIFTA Games at the Kirani James Athletics Stadium in St George’s, Grenada on Easter Sunday. Trinidad and Tobago now has 12 medals in Grenada, after taking 11 on Day 1.
Winter’s fifth attempt, a throw of 14.14 metres, earned her a silver medal in the Girls Under-20 (4kg). Jamaica’s Able Mills won gold with a throw of 15.27, her last effort of the morning.
Another Jamaican, Marla-Kay Lampart, took bronze with a first attempt of 13.81 metres.
The girls' heptathlon began this morning with the 100-metre hurdles.
Kaori Robley won that race in 14.32 seconds to earn 934 points. Defending champion Tenique Vincent was fourth in 14.65, earning 888 points.
Tyrique Vincent continued his charge to a title defence, winning the Boys Open Decathlon’s sixth event, the 110 metre hurdles, in 14.20 seconds. Kaleb Campbell was second in 14.91.
Vincent leads the field with 4892 points; Campbell is in silver position with 4708, with four events to go.
Jaffari Edwards and Niyelle Alleyne also continue their Boys Under-17 Octathlon programme, with a winner to be crowned in today’s afternoon session.
Dario Tavernier qualified for the Boys Under-17 200 metres with the fastest time, 21.42 seconds, winning Semi-final Heat 3.
He’s aiming to run faster, break a record, and bring home another medal for Trinidad and Tobago when the finalists take the track tomorrow.
Eden Chee-Wah was the second fastest qualifier in the Girls Under-17 200 metres. Chee-Wah won Heat 3 in 23.93 seconds. Team TTO’s Jael Peters also qualified for tomorrow’s final with the sixth fastest time, 24.31. She was second in semi-final Heat 1.
Noemi Theodore also qualified for the Girls Under-20 200 metres final with a second-place finish in semi-final heat 3 in a time of 23.77, the sixth fastest overall. She’ll be joined by eighth-fastest qualifier Kayla Charles (23.65) in tomorrow’s final.
