Field specialist Peyton Winter struck three gold medals while Tessica Laurence broke a national record, and Memphis Pioneers trio Josiah Kaiten, Imani Mills, and Kalani Weekes completed sprint doubles at the Maximising Athletic Potential (MAP) Open competition at the Hasely Crawford Stadium in Mucurapo, Port-of-Spain over the weekend.
Winter, of Burnley Athletics Club, first topped the girls’ Under-20 shot put event in the morning session on Saturday with her best throw measuring 13.33 metres to finish ahead of Tenique Vincent of Concorde (10.38m). Winter followed up with a win in the discus throw with a 36.70m effort. In second place was Sofia Quamina of D’Abadie Progressive with 32.72m.
In the evening session, the Burnley field athlete again upstaged Quamina, this time in the javelin throw with a 30.09m effort. Quamina registered a best toss of 15.82m in the two-competitor competition.
The following day, Tessica Laurence again broke the national women’s pole vault record, just as she did during the Carifta Games Trials earlier this year. The Concorde athlete cleared 2.90m to break the national women’s record. She had previously bettered the mark to 2.40m in February during the Carifta qualifiers, surpassing the standard of 2.36m established in Maryland, USA, by Ayana Riviere back in 2008, which had stood on the National Association of Athletics Administrations (NAAATT) books entering the year.
Laurence, who is the reigining Carifta girls open pole vault bronze medallist, also copped a silver in the girls’ U-20 long jump event at the two-day meet, finishing second with 4.73m behind Azalea Price-Quashie (Kaizen Panthers) with 4.93m and ahead of McKaila Warde (Neon Wolves) with 4.61m.
Kaiten’s sprint double was among four gold medals he won over the weekend. On Saturday, the Memphis sprinter sped to victory in the 100m in a time of 11.13 seconds, ahead of Cougars’ Mujahid Joseph (11.71) and Simplex’s Joshua Solomon (11.90). The trio filled the same places on day two in the 200m, with Kaiten winning in 21.98, Joseph second in 23.23, and Solomon third in 23.69.
Kaiten picked up his other two medals in the relays. He partnered with Aidan La Foucade, Kayden Romano, and Khadesh Frank to help Memphis win the U-15 4x100m in 46.47. They finished ahead of the Cougars quartet of Joseph, Josiah Goodridge, Jadon Carasquero, and Makai Johnson (48.10) and the Track Blazers of Presentation College (Zane Rocke, Isaiah Lutchman, Eli Edwards, Kezseon Agard) in 48.90.
On Sunday, running the opening leg, Kaiten–along with Romano, Kermari Samuel, and La Foucade, in that order–won the boys’ U-15 4x400m in 3:51.05. Second was Track Blazers (Isaiah Lutchman, Zane Rocke, Eli Edwards, Keshorn Wilkinson) in 3:53.16, and third was Cougars (Jadon Carasquero, Nathan La Foucade, Lemuel Douglas, Josiah Goodridge) with 3:58.92.
Mills claimed three medals overall, crossing the line first in both the 100m and 200m in the Girls’ U-20 category, and also helped Memphis seal the women’s 4x100m gold. Mills won the dash with an 11.62 clocking ahead of Kaori Robley (Kaizen Panthers) in 11.80 and Zada Charles of Point Fortin New Jets (PFNJ) with 11.99.
In the 200m, Mills topped the field in 23.63 ahead of Charles (24.37) and Kayla Charles (Abilene Wildcats) in 24.48. In the women’s sprint relay, Mills combined with national star sprinter Michelle-Lee Ahye, Eden Chee-Wah, and Kalee Thomas to win in 45.21, comfortably ahead of the Stallions’ lineup of Jernessa Rodriguez, Angel Cumberbatch, Natalia Joseph, and Jahnel Alexander in 49.48.
Weekes dominated the Girls’ U-15 sprint events, first winning the 100m in 12.55 ahead of J’Lenn Roberts (IG Fastlane) with 12.68 and Kaylee Charles (Abilene) with 13.39. Returning on Sunday to find success in the 200m, Weekes clocked 26.03 to beat Kaley Wiltshire (Abilene) and Kya Dyer (Track Blazers) into second and third with times of 26.32 and 26.61, respectively.
