T&T’s Njisane Phillip and Makaira Wallace both won the women’s and men’s keirin and individual sprint doubles at the Second Leg of the Chile Cycling Cup at the Velodromo de Peñalolén in Santiago, Chile, which ended on Saturday.
Wallace copped the gold medal in the women’s sprint when she swept Argentina’s Valentina Mendez in two straight rides in their best-of-three final to secure the gold medal.
Chile’s Daniela Colilef secured the bronze medal, coming back from losing the opening ride against Colombian Marianis Salazar-Sánchez to win 2-1.
Wallace was the top qualifier in the flying 200m sprint in 11.017 seconds, with Colilef second in 11.326 and Mendez third with 11.364.
Next up were the quarterfinals. Wallace overcame Colombian Marta Catalina Ojeda in two straight rides before she overcame a first-ride defeat to another Colombian, Sanchez, in the final two rides to set up her gold medal clash with Mendez, who swept Colilef in two rides.
Wallace also took the keirin gold medal, beating Mendez and Colilef into the second and third spots, respectively.
Wallace had earlier won the first semifinal ahead of Chile’s Paula Molina Rodriguez, with Mendez third, while in semifinal two, hometown cyclist Colilef won ahead of Colombian duo Valentina Garcia Perez and Snachez.
Phillip copped the gold medal in the men’s sprint in two straight rides over Colombian Cristian Ortega, with the European failing to finish the second ride off.
In the bronze medal clash, Spain’s Esteban Sanchez also won in straight rides against Brazilian Joao Viiiiiiiiit Da Silva.
Earlier on, Phillip was also the top qualifier in the flying 200m heats in 9.6411 seconds, with Colombian Cristian Ortega second in 9.721 and Argentina’s Juan Bautista Rodriguez third in 9.977 ahead of the quarterfinals.
The T&T cyclist then won his round-of-16 heat against Chile’s Nicolas Vergara Garcia, followed by his two straight-ride wins against Canadian Nickolas Ridge in the quarterfinals and Spain’s Esteban Sanchez in the semifinal in similar fashion, while Ortega also won in two straight rides over Brazilian Joao Vitor Da Silva.
Phillip stormed to another keirin gold medal, beating Ortega into the silver medal while Spain’s Alejandro Martinez rode to the bronze medal.
When the event pedalled off, Phillip was second in the second qualifying heat of the keirin to Spain’s Alejandro as they both qualified straight to the semifinals before he ended in the runner-up spot to Da Silva in the semifinal.
In the women’s Elimination Race, Chile’s Scarlet Cortes Ugarte rode away with top spot to the delight of the home crowd, with T&T’s Teniel Campbell securing the silver and Uruguayan Paola Belen Wynants, bronze, with T&T’s other entrant, Alexis Ramirez, finishing in the sixth spot.
Campbell (Teniel) added to her medal tally with a bronze in the 20 km (80 laps). Points Race when she finished in the third spot with 23 points, with Cortes again the winner after she tallied 25 points, the same as silver medallist Luciana Wynants, who amassed 25 points as well, with Ramirez fifth with nine points.
Cortes also dominated the women’s Omnium Scratch Race (10 km/40 laps) with 40 points, closely followed by Canada’s Kimberley Chin in the second spot with 38 and T&T’s Ramirez with 36, with Campbell, fourth, a further two points behind.
In the tempo race, Chen won ahead of Campbell and Chile’s Maite Ibarra Martinez, while Ramirez was fifth.
However, Campbell turned the tables on her rivals in the Elimination event to win with Cortes second and Ramirez third, before Cortes returned to winning ways in the Points Race (20 km/80 laps), beating Chen and Campbell into the second and third spots respectively, with Ramirez sixth.
Akil Campbell got the bronze in the men’s Elimination Race after he trailed Mexico’s Ricardo Pena Salas and Chile’s Cristian Pizarro across the finish line.
However, in the Points Race (30 km/120 laps) which included 12 sprints, Campbell could only muster a 16th place finish with 21 points.
