Three different players were on target as the Cornell Glen-coached St. Mary's College whipped visitors Malick Secondary 3-1 to regain sole possession of the lead in the 17-team Secondary Schools Football League (SSFL) Boys Premier at St. Mary's College Ground, Serpentine Road, in St. Clair on Wednesday.
Going into the match, the 'Saints' as St Mary's College are known, and the lone unbeaten team to date in the competition shared the lead at the top of the table with Signal Hill Secondary.
However, from early on in St. Clair, the 'Saints' were intent on extending their unbeaten run to remain at the top, with Nadeem Grant opening the scoring in the 17th minute before Jaedon Thomas made it 2-0 a minute before the half-time interval.
The hosts looked to be cruising to all three points until Malick Secondary, which was coming off a 5-3 triumph against Mucurapo West Secondary, managed to cut the deficit in half via Omillio Millard in the 77th minute.
But that was close, as the visitors would get as substitute Jaylon Manswell sealed all three points for the 'Saints' with their third item in the first minute of injury time to move their points tally to 21 from nine matches, one ahead of a surging St Benedict's College, who held off Signal Hill Secondary 2-1 at the Ato Boldon Stadium in Couva.
St. Benedict's College was gifted the lead ten minutes from the interval when Signal Hill defender Kisean Grant turned the ball into his own net, which the host took into break.
Ten minutes after the resumption, Kanye Glasgow doubled St. Benedict's lead at 2-0 with his sixth goal in two matches.
But with nine minutes left in the match, Signal Hill Secondary, winners of their previous six matches after a first day loss to Tobago rivals Speyside Secondary, pulled one back through Amar Alle Baccas.
However, in the end, the "La Romaine Lions" held on for the valuable three points to climb into the second spot, two points clear of Fatima College and Signal Hill.
At Queen's Royal College Ground in St. Clair, Fatima College came from behind to defeat the Royalians 3-1, who led through Nyrell Roberts' 38th-minute opener.
Gervais Araujo drew Fatima College level at 1-1 in the 41st minute for a 1-1 score at the halftime whistle before Jonathan Mason fired the former champions into the lead on the hour mark, followed by Jahaem Bailey's 78th penalty conversion, his league-best 13th goal of the season, and his secured all three points.
The Roylians then had to finish the match with ten players after referee Nathalya Williams issued a second yellow card to goalkeeper Akinlade Jones for his foul on Bailey, which earned Fatima the spot kick; he converted.
Down South at Lewis Street, San Fernando, defending champions Naparima College kept their hopes of retaining their title alive with a hard-fought 2-1 win over promoted Hillview College.
Naparima College led at the half thanks to Adasa Richardson's 40th-minute effort, but Cristiano Hinds got Hillview College back on even par in the 78th minute, only for Donovan Drayton to fire home an 86th-minute for Naparima to move to 16 points and be in the fifth spot with a match in hand on the leaders.
Down at St Anthony's College Ground in Westmoorings, Arima North Secondary's title ambition was dealt a severe blow via a 3-1 loss to former powerhouse St Anthony's College to slip to the sixth spot.
Starting the day in the cellar spot, St. Anthony’s College took a shock lead through Jeheed Magloire as early as the eighth minute, and ten minutes later, Marley Ramdass added another.
Arima North Secondary managed to cut the lead in the half through Jaeden Samuel from the penalty spot in the 30th minute, but four minutes into the second half, Ramdass netted his second of the match to earn his team their first win of the season and off the foot of the table with five points in the 15th spot, ahead of Mucurapo West Secondary and Trinity College Moka on goal difference.
At the Mannie Ramjohn Stadium in Marabella, Presentation College of San Fernando strolled to a 3-0 win over Speyside Secondary, with Nathaniel Lewis (16th), Aidan Sinanan-McDonald (36th), and Aden Montano (58th) all on target.
Elsewhere, in matches with relegation implications, San Juan North Secondary got two goals from Nicholas Cyrus in a 4-1 defeat of Mucurapo West Secondary at Bourg Mulatresse in San Juan, while Trinity College East and St. Augustine Secondary fought out an entertaining 3-3 draw at Trinity East Ground in Trincity.
