Two second-half goals from Jaedon Thomas and Jamari Gilkes saw St Mary’s College shut out Arima North Secondary 2-0 and maintain their top spot on the 17-team standings of the Sports Company of Trinidad and Tobago (SporTT) Boys Premiership Division of the Secondary Schools Football League on Saturday at the Arima Velodrome.
The result ensured that ‘The Saints,' as they are called, are the only team to be unbeaten for the season. The win moved them to 30 points after 12 matches; however, the expected flow for the second position was interrupted by a 1-1 tie for St Benedict’s College at the expense of arch-rivals Presentation College, San Fernando, at the Mannie Ramjohn Stadium.
Naparima College, the defending champion team, has now climbed to second after their 2-0 triumph over San Juan North at their Lewis Street, San Fernando, home. Though still reeling from their big losses from the 2025 season, Jaydon Caprietta and Jabari Rodriguez lifted their team with goals in the 38th and 45th minutes, which saw them move to 25 points, the same as Fatima and St Benedict’s College, but with a superior goal difference.
But at the Arima Velodrome, the home of Arima’s ‘Dial Dynamos,' sadness consumed the atmosphere. Succumbing to their fifth defeat of the season, a blanket of sorrow covered the venue, amidst the glorious sun that perched through the gaping sky. It was that kind of day for the Arimians, who, despite a blinding start to the season, now find themselves clinging to hope on that kind of day. to hope.
Coach Cornel Glen’s men kept their record intact, despite a goalless first half that handed hope to the home team. But after moments of close calls, Jaedon Thomas dashed into the penalty area to head home a left-sided corner from Melick Adams in the 61st minute for a 1-0 advantage.
And seven minutes later, what appeared to be hopes of an equalizer for the home team and their fans were stomped out in the 68th minute. This time, Gilkes positioned himself perfectly when an earlier shot was parried into his path by goalkeeper Xavier Caraballo, allowing Gilkes to tap into an empty net for the 2-0 victory.
Arima’s attempt to pull a goal back had been blocked by a sealed CIC backdoor, as their inevitable fall now highlights an area of concern for their staff.
