For St Mary’s College teacher Aaron Manickchand, the Under-15 Boys’ Secondary Schools National Basketball Championshp title isn't just a trophy for the cabinet; it is a testament to the "resilience, growth, and improved performance" of a group of young men who refused to let past failure define them.
Watching from the sidelines at the Southern Regional Indoor Sports Arena in Pleasantville on Friday (March 27), Manickchand raved about the team's effort as they defeated Arima North Secondary 42-24 to capture the U-15 title. For a team that had suffered a heartbreaking defeat in the final just one year ago, this victory was the ultimate redemption.
Manickchand pointed to a holistic support system and a gruelling training regimen as the foundation for the "Saints" success. He credited the culture of discipline fostered by coach Jabulani Mobhair, who praised his "astute leadership".
"The team trains regularly under the astute leadership of Coach Jabulani Mobhair, whose dedication to player development, discipline, and tactical excellence has been a key factor in the team’s progress and achievements," Manickchand said. He further emphasised that this wasn't just a win for the players on the court, but for the entire institution: "Additionally, the boys have the support of the Principal, teachers and their peers as they proudly represent the college."
After falling short in the previous year’s title match, the team was afforded another opportunity to compete and turned disappointment into fuel.
"Having suffered defeat in the U-15 final the previous year, the team retained the core group of players who remained eligible for the age group and were therefore afforded another opportunity to compete for the national title," Manickchand noted. "Demonstrating resilience, growth, and improved performance, the team returned to the competition more determined and this time emerged victorious, securing the championship."
This determination was evident early in the season when the squad tasted success in the U-15 Elevate 3-on-3 competition, a victory that Manickchand says "set the tone" for their dominant run in the full-court format.
While the teacher’s praise focused on the collective spirit, he was quick to highlight the specific contributions that made the national title possible. Captain Aiden Noel was the focal point, contributing an instrumental performance with 14 points that earned him the "Most Valuable Player" (MVP) award.
However, Manickchand was equally vocal about the unsung heroes of the squad. He made "special mention" of Maleek Frederick, a crucial addition since last season, whose experience and diverse skill set proved integral to the team's offensive flow. He also singled out Josiah John, praising his evolution into a "tenacious defender and an attacking guard" who effectively neutralised Arima North’s offensive threats.
As the T&T Schools Basketball Association (TTSBA) celebrations wound down in San Fernando, the message from the St Mary’s camp was clear: this championship was earned through a year of discipline, a community of support, and a refusal to settle for second best. Under the watchful eyes of their teachers and the tactical guidance of their coach, the Saints have much to celebrate this season.
