In the absence of athletes, T&T’s top international mixed martial arts official, Warren Gill, has been flying T&T’s flag with much pride.
Gill, the referee for seven bouts at last year’s International Mixed Martial Arts Federation World Youth Championships in Abu Dhabi, as well as a judge in over 46 fights, is currently in Belgrade, Serbia, displaying the red, white, and black of T&T at the ongoing International Mixed Martial Arts Federation (IMMAF) European Championships 2025, which features a European Youth Championship, a European Juniors Championship, and a European Seniors Championship.
Gill has represented T&T before at the Pan-American Championships in Mexico and Colombia, as well as the World Championships in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, and Albina. He also officiated at the World Youth Championships in the United Arab Emirates in Abu Dhabi.
Coincidentally, T&T was represented at the World Youth Championships in the United Arab Emirates in Abu Dhabi for the first time by a five-member team comprising Alyssa Adams, who earned a bronze medal.
Adams started her campaign by defeating Ireland’s Maggie Meaney, who at the time was favoured to win the 52 kg C class. Later, however, Adams, a Gracie jiu-jitsu fighter who trains under Gill as the technical director, was then beaten in the semifinals by Azerbaijan’s Sonayeva Ayan, who later went on to win the silver medal.
In a release yesterday, T&T’s Mixed Martial Arts Federation president Jason Fraser told the media the local mixed martial arts federation continues to fly the T&T flag in every aspect of amateur and professional sports worldwide.
According to Fraser, “We are very proud of Warren Gill, as it is not easy to be an official at the highest level. Only the top-quality referees attend these championships, and to be selected as an official, one must be an accredited, certified official under the IMMAF.”
Fraser is now desirous of taking another team back to Abu Dhabi at the World Youth Championships, with hopes of returning with more than the lone medal they won last year.
He said the team has already been selected and has been training since January.
