Caribs Rugby Club claimed its second title for 2026, a week after it won the first.
On Sunday at Queen’s Park Savannah in Port-of-Spain, Caribs got the better of Harvard in the final 10-7. The win came courtesy of a try from Askari Dwaud, which Anderson Joseph converted.
Joseph later ensured the Caribs’ victory when he converted from a penalty kick. The Harvard men were no slouches on the field and came close with a try and a conversion by Alphonso Rodriguez. The win came exactly a week after a dominant Caribs outfit clobbered Trinidad Northern 12-10 for the Robert Farfan Cup at the Mayaro Recreation Ground.
Last year, Caribs captured nearly every title on offer, including the League, the Knock Out, the Bruno Brown Cup and the Robert Farfan Cup. Soon after their triumph in the Robert Farfan Cup, Caribs president Reinaldo Bermúdez said his focus is to win everything again this year.
Caribs’ coach Richard Staglon echoed similar sentiments on Tuesday, saying his charges are well capable of achieving it. In Sunday’s game, he said the boys executed well. “Well, the boys came together pretty nicely in training, and all the training paid off. They executed the game plan to perfection, and we hope to continue that throughout the season,” Staglon said on Wednesday.
Their plan, he told Guardian Media Sports, was to play safe rugby and generally keep it safe. “It started off a little shaky against Harvard on the day, but as the day progressed, everything generally got better. The game was close, 10-7, relatively. Harvard came out and put in a good effort in the finals.”
According to Staglon, “I have a lot of confidence in the players, the coaching staff and the whole Caribs team. We just pray that everybody stays injury-free and we keep our players safe.”
Meanwhile, Royalians took the third-place prize after Trinidad Northerns forfeited a third-place play-off with them.
Earlier in the semifinals, Northern forfeited a meeting with the Caribs, whom they lost to a week and a half ago. The other semifinal encounter saw Harvard getting the better of Royalians 5-0 for the right to advance to the final.
