CASTRIES, St Lucia – Track queen Julien Alfred and cricketer Johnson Charles once again took him the awards for Senior Sports Personalities of the Year when the Ministry of Youth Development and Sports held their annual awards over the weekend.
There was no surprise when Prime Minister Philip J Pierre revealed that the 23-year-old Alfred, who created history by winning St Lucia’s first ever Olympic medals at the 2024 Paris Olympics, was named Senior Female Sports Personality of 2024.
Alfred also won the World Indoor Championship 60m title and Diamond League 100m title to go along with her gold medal in the 100m and silver in the 200m at the Olympics.
Government had pledged a reward of $1 million to her back in September, and a cheque in that amount was presented at the awards.
Meanwhile, the 36-year-old Charles won the male equivalent after enjoying a relatively successful year for the West Indies, while also helping the St Lucia Kings win their maiden Republic Bank Caribbean Premier League (CPL) title.
West Indies head coach, Daren Sammy, took home the Coach of the Year award, after coaching the Kings to victory over the Guyana Amazon Warriors in the CPL final.
