CAS­TRIES, St Lu­cia – Track queen Julien Al­fred and crick­eter John­son Charles once again took him the awards for Se­nior Sports Per­son­al­i­ties of the Year when the Min­istry of Youth De­vel­op­ment and Sports held their an­nu­al awards over the week­end.

There was no sur­prise when Prime Min­is­ter Philip J Pierre re­vealed that the 23-year-old Al­fred, who cre­at­ed his­to­ry by win­ning St Lu­cia’s first ever Olympic medals at the 2024 Paris Olympics, was named Se­nior Fe­male Sports Per­son­al­i­ty of 2024.

Al­fred al­so won the World In­door Cham­pi­onship 60m ti­tle and Di­a­mond League 100m ti­tle to go along with her gold medal in the 100m and sil­ver in the 200m at the Olympics.

Gov­ern­ment had pledged a re­ward of $1 mil­lion to her back in Sep­tem­ber, and a cheque in that amount was pre­sent­ed at the awards.

Mean­while, the 36-year-old Charles won the male equiv­a­lent af­ter en­joy­ing a rel­a­tive­ly suc­cess­ful year for the West In­dies, while al­so help­ing the St Lu­cia Kings win their maid­en Re­pub­lic Bank Caribbean Pre­mier League (CPL) ti­tle.

West In­dies head coach, Daren Sam­my, took home the Coach of the Year award, af­ter coach­ing the Kings to vic­to­ry over the Guyana Ama­zon War­riors in the CPL fi­nal.
