A warning is being made to all law enforcement officers and public officials to think before they support gang-related activities as they will feel the full brunt of the law.
This warning was made by the T&T Police Service’s Legal Officer Insp Zaheer Ali during Thursday’s edition of CNC3s The Morning Brew with Jason “JW” Williams.
Ali explained that this type of “support” fell under the Anti-Gang Legislation and should be taken into consideration.
“Law enforcement officers need to be very careful in the conduct of your activity and hope that association does not land you with the police knocking at your door on a gang-related charge,” Ali said.
ASP (Ag) Rajesh Lal, who also appeared on the programme, said they should instead try to bring positive change to communities.
He said, “Change the way things operate in that area, make that area a positive area because we know that there are areas where there are many law-abiding citizens and the very few that make it uncomfortable for them.
“We are there to protect you and to ensure that you have a safe environment,” he added.
This week, the Guardian Media Investigations Desk focused on why so many soldiers seem to be drifting to the wrong side of the law.
The article disclosed that in the last four years, 14 soldiers have been charged for various criminal offences from forgery to assault and even murder. However, according to military sources, less than five soldiers per year have been discharged from the Defence Force.
