Today, at 2:00 pm, with collaboration and approval from the Government of Guyana, two U.S. Navy aircraft embarked on the USS George Washington, will conduct a Guyana Defence Force-coordinated and approved flyover of Georgetown and its surrounding areas.
A statement issued by the U.S. Embassy in Guyana notes that the “exercise builds upon our routine security cooperation and bilateral defence partnership with Guyana.”
“As part of its worldwide defence mission, U.S. Navy vessels routinely transit international waters all over the world conducting similar exercises and exchanges with partners and allies,” the Embassy’s statement explained.
Earlier this week, Marine Corps Major General Julie Nethercot, who is SOUTHCOM’s Strategy, Policy, and Plans Director, and oversees strategic planning, policy development, and security cooperation coordination for Latin America and the Caribbean, met with senior defence officials in Guyana.
SOUTHCOM—The United States (US) Army’s Southern Command—is assisting Guyana in the field of security cooperation and security assistance initiatives to advance technology platforms.
The Directorate directly supports U.S. Southern Command’s goals and objectives in deterring aggression, defeating threats, rapidly responding to crises, and working with allies and partner nations to strengthen the region’s capacity to ensure a secure, free, and prosperous Western Hemisphere.
During her visit, Nethercot met with Brigadier Omar Khan, Guyana Defence Force (GDF) Chief of Staff, to discuss ongoing security cooperation and security assistance initiatives to advance technology platforms.
In a statement, the US Embassy in Guyana said this visit is her second trip to Guyana and signifies the U.S. commitment to partnering with the GDF as it continues to increase its capabilities and expand its force.
“The United States continues to work closely with its partners around the world to strengthen alliances and partnerships by improving interoperability, deepening information-sharing and planning, and conducting complex joint and combined exercises,” the statement said. —GEORGETOWN, Guyana, (CMC)
