T&T and Lightsource BP talk solar energy projects

This coun­try has moved an­oth­er step clos­er in its plans to em­bark on large scale so­lar pow­er projects fol­low­ing a meet­ing be­tween a T&T del­e­ga­tion led by Min­is­ter of En­er­gy and En­er­gy In­dus­tries and Min­is­ter in the Of­fice of the Prime Min­is­ter, Stu­art Young MP, and a team of ex­ec­u­tives from Light­source BP, led by Group CEO, Nick Boyle. 

The meet­ing oc­curred to­day, Tues­day 02nd No­vem­ber 2021. 

A re­lease from the Of­fice of the Prime Min­is­ter re­ports that the meet­ing’s dis­cus­sions sur­round­ed the com­mit­ment to build two so­lar parks in Trinidad with a planned cu­mu­la­tive out­put of 112.2 MW. Min­is­ter Young al­so dis­cussed the pos­si­bil­i­ty of ad­di­tion­al fu­ture so­lar projects in Trinidad with the pos­si­bil­i­ty of build­ing a so­lar park in To­ba­go. 

Min­is­ter Young in­vit­ed Light­source BP to deep­en its ties with Trinidad and To­ba­go and ex­plore the pos­si­bil­i­ty of fur­ther projects in the re­gion as re­new­able en­er­gy be­comes in­creas­ing­ly im­por­tant in the push to re­duce glob­al car­bon emis­sions.

Ear­li­er to­day, at the Heads of Gov­ern­ment ses­sion at the COP26 Cli­mate Change Sum­mit in Glas­gow, Scot­land, Prime Min­is­ter Dr Kei­th Row­ley MP told world lead­ers that Trinidad and To­ba­go has “em­barked up­on am­bi­tious plans to re­duce emis­sions and build cli­mate re­silience”, in­clud­ing ex­plor­ing op­por­tu­ni­ties with so­lar en­er­gy. 

“We are in the process of es­tab­lish­ing the largest util­i­ty-scale so­lar re­new­able en­er­gy project in the Caribbean with a ca­pac­i­ty of 112 megawatts, ac­count­ing for 10% of our pow­er needs, and we plan to in­crease this com­ple­ment to 30% by 2030,” Dr Row­ley said.
